The Chinese Association (Gauteng)

PRESS STATEMENT:
DR XIAOMEI HAVARD

February 12, 2021

  1. We regard it as both an honour and a privilege when someone from our Chinese Community is appointed as an MP and in this instance Dr Xiaomei Havard who we wish every success in her new post and making a positive difference in our Country.   At the same time her election is a sign of progress that finally the Chinese community is considered as a part of South Africa.

  1. It therefore really saddened us as the Chinese Community to witness the opposition to her appointment by sections of our rainbow nation who resorted to blatant Xenophobic and racists remarks in an attempt to exclude Chinese or not recognising that we belong to South Africa.

  1. We as The Chinese Association of Gauteng (TCA) condemn all illegal acts committed by anyone, regardless of a person’s ethnicity, race or gender.   We as South Africans are committed to the fight against crime and corruption in our Country and believe that as citizens of this wonderful country, it is our duty to uphold the rule of law and to do what is right, in the interest of our Country and its people.

  1. We take strong exception and condemn the continual stereotyping of us as an entire ethnic group being tainted and tarnished with the same brush as perpetrators of crime taking place in South Africa.   It is easy to do so as we are being a minority group in South Africa are vulnerable.   It is hard enough being the minority group of the country and unacceptable that an entire group being unfairly and without justification linked to crime and illegal acts, which only makes it more difficult for us to be recognized as fellow South Africans to be treated equally and with dignity.

  1. Prosecution should take place on factual evidence presented and tested in a court and not on predisposed dispositions or prejudices that exist in a biased mind-set, blaming an entire community.   A characteristic of a successful democracy has always been the doctrine of “innocent until proven guilty” and to allow the law and Court process to take place.

  1. We reiterate that the TCA condemns any kind of crime or corruption regardless of a person’s ethnicity, status or gender. We as a nation need to jointly take a stand against crime and corruption. This is the only way we overcome this problem and to build a strong Country in which all can enjoy prosperity and peace.

  1. We the TCA are against all forms or racism, xenophobia, violence, (gender based violence is abhorrent) including incitement, to violence sexism and any form of discrimination and prejudice wherever it exists, but particularly here in South Africa, our beloved Country.
